that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood or behavior, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Such conditions may be occasional or long-lasting (chronic) and affect someone’s ability to relate to others and function each day.
Mental illness is a leading cause of disability. Untreated mental illness can cause severe emotional, behavioral and physical health problems.

When to see a doctor?
If you have any signs or symptoms of mental illness, see your primary care provider or mental health professional. Most mental illnesses don't improve on their own, and if untreated, a mental illness may get worse over time and cause serious problems.
Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year, and yet nearly 40% of them don't seek treatment or help from others.
