Do You Need Professional Help Managing Your Anger ?

 Anger is a natural, though sometimes unwanted or irrational, emotion that everybody experiences from time to time.  


There are many anger management techniques that you can learn and practice by yourself or teach to others.  However, if you, or someone you know, experiences a lot of regular anger or very strong anger (rage) then you may want to seek help from a Your Center counselor.

You should seek professional help if anger is having a long-term negative impact on your relationships, is making you unhappy, or is resulting in any dangerous or violent behavior.

Common triggers, Signs and Symptoms

Common Triggers

 

* Grief and/or sadness, loss of a family member, friend or other loved one.
* Rudeness, poor interpersonal skills and/or poor service. 
* Tiredness and be more irritable when tired.
* Hunger and lack of nutrition 
* Injustice: infidelity, being bullied, humiliated or embarrassed
* Sexual frustration.
* Money problems and the stress associated with debt.
* A feeling of failure or disappointment.
* Drugs or alcohol, or when withdrawing from such substances.
* Being treated inappropriately.
* Physical or mentally unwell

* Living with a serious illness can lead to feeling angry. 

Physical Signs of Anger

 

  • Frequent rubbing of the face.
  • Tightly clasping one hand with the other, or making clenched fists.
  • Clenching of the jaw or grinding teeth.
  • Shallow breathing and/or breathlessness.
  • Increased heart-rate.
  • Perspiring, sweaty palms.
  • Trembling or shaking lips, hands.
  • Rocking motion whilst sitting.
  • Pacing.
  • Being rude and losing a sense of humor.
  • Talking louder.
  • Increased cravings for tobacco, sugar, alcohol, drugs, comfort food etc.

Emotional Symptoms of Anger

 

  • A desire to ‘run away’ from the situation.
  • Irritation.
  • Feeling sad or depressed.
  • Felling guilty or resentful.
  • Anxiety, feeling anxious can manifest in many different ways.
  • A feeling or desire to lash out verbally or physically.

Tips: A Breathing Excercise

 When you start to feel tense and angry, try to isolate yourself for 15 minutes and concentrate on relaxing and calm, steady breathing:

  • Inhale and exhale deeply 3 or 4 times in a row.
  • Count slowly to four as you inhale.
  • Count slowly to eight as you exhale.
  • Focus on feeling the air move in and out of your lungs.
  • Concentrate and feel your ribs slowly rise and fall as you repeat the exercise.
  • Stop and revert to normal breathing if you start to feel dizzy at any time.


 

If any of these statements are true for you then you may need professional help to manage your anger.

  • Your behavior has led to any sort of criminal or civil wrongdoing.
  • You are violent towards your partner, children, or other people.
  • You threaten violence to people or property.
  • You have outbursts of rage that involve deliberately breaking things.
  • You have constant arguments with people close to you, your spouse/partner, parents, children, colleagues, or friends.
  • You feel angry frequently but internalize the emotion.
  • You think that you may need professional help with your anger.
